Separate a Subject From Its Background With AI
Turn one flat image into reusable subject and background assets. Keep the foreground as a transparent image, create a reconstructed background behind it, and reuse the subject mask for further editing.
The subject, the reconstructed background, and a subject mask come from a single upload.
Upload an image
Separate one image into a transparent foreground, reconstructed background, and reusable subject mask.
Separate Background
Keep the subject and create a reusable background behind it.

The covered background area is reconstructed with AI using the visible scene as context.
Processing time varies with image complexity. Large subjects and detailed backgrounds may require more reconstruction.

One Subject, One Background, Both Reusable
Instead of ending with only a transparent cutout, a background separator keeps the subject and also creates a reusable version of the scene behind it.

What it does
What Is a Background Separator?
A background separator identifies the main subject in an image and separates it from the surrounding scene. Unlike a tool that only removes the background, this workflow keeps both the subject and a reusable version of the background available for later editing.
It is also called an AI background separator, image background separator, or subject background separator.
Identify the subject
AI locates the primary person, product, object, or character in the image.
Separate it from the scene
The subject is isolated as a transparent asset with a matching subject mask.
Keep the background
The scene behind the subject is rebuilt so it stays usable as its own image.
Separator or remover?
Background Separator vs Background Remover
Both isolate a subject, but they are built for different outcomes.
Background Remover
Use it when you mainly need a transparent subject.
Output
Transparent subject
Background Separator
Keep bothUse it when you want to keep both the subject and the scene behind it.
Output
- Transparent foreground
- Reconstructed background
- Subject mask
What you get
What Does an AI Background Separator Create?
Transparent subject
The main subject as a transparent PNG for independent placement in new designs and scenes.
Reconstructed background
A reusable scene image with the area previously covered by the subject filled using visible surroundings as context.
Subject mask
A grayscale mask for precise selections, compositing, and masking in other editing tools.
When to use it
When Should You Use a Background Separator?
Reuse the subject
Move the person, product, or object into another design without removing it again.
Keep the scene
Continue editing the background even after the subject has been isolated.
Build composite images
Place graphics, text, or other visual elements between the foreground and background.
Prepare assets for editing
Use the subject mask and separated outputs in Photoshop, Figma, After Effects, or other visual workflows.
How it works
How AI Background Separation Works
Upload one image
Choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP with a clearly recognizable subject.
Separate the image
AI isolates the subject, creates a subject mask, and reconstructs the background area behind it.
Download the outputs
Open the result page and use the subject, reconstructed background, or mask as separate assets.
About the background
Generated Background vs Original Hidden Pixels
The area of the background covered by the subject is not present in the original image. AI generates a plausible continuation from the visible surroundings so the background works as a complete image. It does not recover the exact content that was hidden.
Simple walls, floors, skies, and repeating environments continue more reliably. Large covered areas, text, faces, unique objects, and intricate patterns may need additional editing.
Background Separator vs Image to Layers
Two assets or many layers?
Background Separator
Use it when the subject and its background are the two parts you need.

Image to Layers
Use Image to Layers when you need several independent objects, design elements, characters, props, or depth layers.
Outputs
Multiple editable layers

Want to Keep Foreground and Background as Separate Layers?
This page explains the general background separation tool. For a workflow built specifically around foreground and background as independent layers — text-behind-subject effects, repositioning, and simple parallax — use the Foreground Background Separator.

What is a background separator?
A background separator is a tool that identifies the main subject in an image and separates it from the scene behind it, keeping both the subject and a reusable background.
Is a background separator the same as a background remover?
No. A background remover is mainly designed to give you a transparent subject. A background separator also creates a reusable reconstructed background and a subject mask.
What does an AI background separator output?
A transparent subject, a reconstructed background image, and a grayscale subject mask.
Can it separate a person from a background?
Yes. People are a common subject. So are products, objects, characters, and other clearly recognizable foreground elements.
Can it separate products from backgrounds?
Yes. Product images with a clearly visible subject can be separated into a transparent subject and reconstructed background.
Does it preserve the background?
It keeps the visible background and rebuilds the part that was hidden behind the subject, so the background stays usable as its own image.
Is the hidden background recovered or generated?
Generated. Pixels hidden behind the subject were never captured in the source image, so AI generates a plausible continuation from the visible surroundings.
Should I use a Background Separator or Image to Layers?
Use a Background Separator when the subject and its background are the two parts you need. Use Image to Layers when you need multiple objects or visual elements separated independently.
Keep the Subject and the Background
Separate one flat image into a reusable subject and a reconstructed background without stopping at a transparent cutout.
