Need SVG for Your Family Shadow Box?
You can continue beyond image separation.
After generating family photo layers, select a suitable family group or silhouette layer and open it in our Image to SVG tool. Turn meaningful family moments into clean vector curves for Cricut cutting, laser wooden plaques, and custom gifts.
No need to upload the same layer again when continuing from a supported result.
Image to SVG is optional and charged separately at 30 credits per selected image.
SVG conversion does not automatically produce a complete, cut-ready multi-layer shadow box template.

Make something personal
Not Just Any Family. Your Family.
There are plenty of beautiful family-themed illustrations. But they don't show your daughter holding her favorite toy, your parents standing together, or the dog who somehow ends up in every family picture. Start with the photograph you've already chosen and use its visual elements as the starting point for a keepsake that reflects your own memories.
Use the Family Photo You Love
Start with a real photograph of your family rather than a generic portrait.

Your family photo, step by step
From One Family Picture to Editable Image Layers
Step 1
Choose a Favorite Family Photo
Select a picture you want to create with. A clear image with recognizable people and visible details is a useful starting point.
Step 2
Generate Image Layers
Upload your photograph and start Detailed Layers. AI attempts to identify and separate the visible subjects and scenery.
Step 3
Review the People and Details
Inspect the resulting image layers. Pay particular attention to faces, hands, hair, pets, and areas where family members overlap.
Step 4
Refine and Export
Use available editing options and download supported image formats for further design work.
Step 5
Prepare Your Personalized Artwork
Choose the elements you want to keep. Refine the composition or create appropriate cutting paths if your project uses physical paper or other materials.
ImageToLayers prepares editable image elements. Designing and assembling a finished physical shadow box requires additional work.
Meaningful gifts begin with real memories
Start with a Photo That Already Has a Story
A family photograph can mean different things to different people. For a grandparent, it might be a favorite picture of the grandchildren. For a parent, it could be the first photo where everyone finally looked at the camera.
The value of a personalized keepsake often comes from the memory behind it. Start with the image that means something to you. Explore its separate elements and develop artwork that carries more of that memory into your creative project.
The model may combine overlapping people, alter facial details, or estimate areas hidden in the source image. Review the result and refine the details that matter.

Understand what you are creating
Editable Photo Layers Are Not Finished Paper-Cut Portraits
A family photo contains skin tones, hair, fabric textures, lighting, shadows, and many overlapping details. A physical shadow box uses selected shapes or materials arranged to create depth.
Those are different stages of the creative process.

Six Things Worth Checking Before You Upload
A clear, meaningful source photo can make the resulting image layers easier to review and refine.
Choose a Moment You Love
The best starting photo isn't necessarily the most formal one. Choose the picture that captures the people and memory you want to celebrate.
Keep Faces Clearly Visible
If facial features matter to your finished design, choose a photograph where they can be seen without heavy blur or obstruction.
Consider How People Overlap
People standing shoulder to shoulder can be easier to inspect than a crowded photo where faces, arms, and clothing overlap extensively.
Look for Useful Background Details
A garden, family home, holiday tree, beach, or other familiar place may help make the eventual keepsake feel personal.
Check the Lighting
Photos with clear subjects and recognizable clothing boundaries can make generated layers easier to evaluate.
Use a Good-Quality Original
Whenever possible, choose the original image instead of a heavily compressed screenshot or tiny social media thumbnail.
Review the Details That Make Everyone Recognizable
AI-generated image layers should be inspected carefully before they become part of a personalized gift or keepsake.
Faces and Expressions
Review eyes, smiles, facial outlines, and expressions. The model cannot guarantee exact preservation of every person's appearance.
Hair and Clothing
Fine hair strands, overlapping clothing, scarves, and patterned fabrics may be separated or reconstructed imperfectly.
Hands and Arms
Family photos often include hugs, children sitting on someone’s lap, and people holding hands. Review these overlapping areas closely.
Babies and Young Children
Small faces, partially hidden limbs, and fine details may be harder to separate accurately.
Family Pets
Check fur, ears, tails, and body outlines where pets overlap family members or furniture.
Meaningful Accessories
Inspect toys, flowers, decorations, or other items you want to retain in your project.
AI may estimate details hidden in the source image. Reconstructed areas are not guaranteed to match the original people or objects.
Family photo layer questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn a family photo into shadow box layers?
Yes. You can upload a family photo and use Detailed Layers to attempt to separate visible people, pets, objects, and background scenery into editable image layers. Use those elements as a starting point for a personalized shadow box design.
Does this tool automatically create a finished family shadow box?
No. It creates editable image layers rather than a completed physical shadow box. Preparing paper layers, cutting paths, dimensions, framing, and assembly requires additional design work.
Can I upload a family photo taken on my phone?
Yes. Supported JPG, PNG, and WebP photos can be used. A clear original photograph generally provides a better starting point for reviewing facial features and other details.
Can it separate each family member into a different layer?
The AI may separate visible people into individual elements in some images, but it does not guarantee one layer per person. Family members who overlap, hug, or stand closely together may remain combined or have imperfect boundaries.
Will it preserve everyone’s face exactly?
Exact facial preservation is not guaranteed. Small changes to expressions, facial outlines, eyes, or other features may occur during separation or reconstruction. Review the result carefully before making a personalized portrait.
Can I use a photo with children or grandparents?
Yes. You can use an authorized family photograph containing children, grandparents, parents, or other family members. Visibility, lighting, and overlap affect the quality of the resulting layers.
Can I include our family dog or cat?
Yes. The model can attempt to separate visible pets and other objects along with the people in your photo. Fine fur or overlapping animals may need additional cleanup.
Does it work with large family group photos?
You can upload a large family group photo, but crowded images with overlapping people are more challenging. Some people may remain in shared layers, and small features may be reconstructed inaccurately.
Can I use a family vacation or holiday picture?
Yes. Family vacations, holiday gatherings, outdoor portraits, and other personal photographs can be used as source images for AI layer separation.
Can I create a family silhouette from my photograph?
The generated image layers can serve as source material for developing a silhouette. The tool does not automatically guarantee a clean, recognizable, or physically cut-ready family silhouette design.
Can I make a personalized gift for grandparents?
You can use a family photo as a starting point for developing a personalized keepsake or gift. The final design, printing, cutting, framing, and any added lettering must be prepared separately.
Does the tool automatically add family names or dates?
No. This page focuses on AI image separation. Add names, dates, and other personalized text later using suitable design software.
Can I choose exactly five or eight paper layers?
Not automatically. Detailed Layers attempts to separate visual image elements rather than generate a fixed number of physical paper sheets. You may need to combine, simplify, or reorganize the result.
How many image layers will I receive?
The number varies based on the source image. Our existing woodland examples contain 16 and 17 AI-generated image layers, including background layers, but these counts are not guarantees for family photos.
Can I download individual PNG layers?
The existing ImageToLayers workflow supports individual PNG layer exports, subject to the completed result and applicable export access.
Can I export a layered PSD file?
The existing workflow supports layered PSD exports, subject to applicable export permissions. PSD can be useful for further image editing in compatible software.
Does ImageToLayers support Image to SVG for family photos?
Yes. Once you separate your family photo into editable layers, you can choose any individual or group layer and continue to our Image to SVG conversion tool. This is a separate paid step and does not automatically convert every layer.
Can I convert family photo layers into SVG for Cricut or laser cutting?
Yes. You can convert a selected family silhouette layer into SVG. You should review paths and ensure separate figures or connected silhouettes are supported for your specific cutter.
Can I sell personalized family shadow box designs?
You can use ImageToLayers as part of a commercial design workflow, subject to applicable service terms and rights to the original photographs. Obtain appropriate permission to process customer images and verify the quality of any files or products you sell.
How much does Family Photo to Shadow Box cost?
Detailed Layers currently uses 60 credits per generation. Optional Image to SVG conversion currently uses 30 credits per selected image. These operations are charged separately.
What should I do if the AI changes someone’s face or combines two people?
Review the generated layers and use available editing tools where appropriate. You may need to refine the artwork manually or try a clearer, less crowded photo. The model cannot guarantee individual separation or exact reconstruction of every family member.
